Last Day--Ocean View

Last day in Peru. We spent the morning in the market buying gifts. You moms, dads, sisters, and brothers are in for some fun Peruvian stuff. This afternoon we went to the ocean to watch surfers and see the beauty of the coast. Below are a few pictures from today, the last picture being the whole team. This was an amazing trip and it's sad to leave. This will probably be the last blog post so thanks so much for reading and praying for us. We so appreciate your support. These students are awesome human beings and they will go far in life as they serve the Lord. They love Jesus so much and it's inspiring to me. I'll leave us with a quote from Erwin McManus...

"You are most fully alive when
you are on an adventure with God."

Day 8 pics

As Tanya mentioned below, we had a debriefing time tonight. What a great time of story and reflecting on what God has done this week. So far 11 people have given up their lives to Jesus. So much has been done to grow and expand the Kingdom of God.
Most of the team just left to go to a movie. Tonight we ate at Chili's, see pics below. Tomorrow we'll go to the market and shop for fun things for family/friends.
Hannah, Lauren, and Stone: Check out 2 pics I posted for you below. Love yall and see you soon! , Dad
Lauren, Jen, and Angela at Chili's tonight.

Our group of 19 plus two IMB Journeygirls at dinner tonight 5/22/09.

The paint didn't always get on the building. This red hand was applied to Jen's back after this pic!

Stone, this one is for you bud...we saw a red train coming down the mountain today.

Hannah and Lauren, you wanted me to bring you a Llama but this is close as I got to catching one :)

Two school girls.

Worshipping and leading an evangelism seminar with pastors and their families. This is their church. Dirt floor, brick wallks, and no roof. The Peruvian guy to my left--in the back right--is Martin (Mar--teen). He is a Christian and did a wonderful job translating for us this week. He is so humble and wonderful...I call him a little Jesus. These kids are the future leaders of the church. This village has 14,000 people with about 180 Christians. It's our prayer that in the generations to come God would raise up kids to reach thousands in this village for Jesus.

From the roof-less church in picture above, their offering plate was a desk drawer. Love it so much I think my church should use desk drawers so we can be like these wonderful Peruvian Christians.

Airport Info.

This is the flight information for meeting the team at the airport:

Day 8 -- they arrived in Lima!

Peter called a few minutes ago and they made it to Lima about 4pm. The team did not have any altitude problems going over the mountains and now they are getting ready to go eat at Chili's (American restaurant). They will be debriefing at the hotel tonight and touring Lima on Saturday. They arrive at the airport at 7pm and fly out at 10pm -- which is 11pm our time I think.

Day 7

Everyone that was sick seems to be doing a lot better. Everyone is out and about doing ministry, eating, etc.

Tonight is our last night in Huancayo so there are big gatherings with the ppl we have been working with all week. One party is at the Baptist Church, one at the University, and one at a village. We hope to see a lot of Peruvians come out for these parties. The ESL university team should have about 200 college students there and we hear there will be a TV crew to broadcast our BCM students sharing the gospel. They will do an invitation to follow Jesus tonight so be praying for that.

My team finished painting the city hall in a village. The president of the village was so excited and grateful to see it. We gave him a Bible too. The missionaries here hope to share the Jesus film in this building to the village ppl soon. Serving ppl like Jesus did goes a long way. 3 days ago when we began to paint the building the construction workers were pretty rude and crass to us. After painting their village's building today they were shaking our hands, thanking us, and wanting pictures with us in front of the painted building. Maybe they will come see the Jesus film when it is shown there :)

I'll probably update later tonight. Thank you so much for your prayers, we sense them.

Day 6

It's a good day so far with a few teams still out doing ministry. During the ESL university teaching there were at least 4 people that came to faith in Jesus, one of those being a teacher. Several of our students were able to share their testimony in how they came to faith. Two Peruvians were moved to tears as God was using our students to draw these to Himself. Later in the day one team taught 400 children at once, sharing testimonies and Scripture. After the hour of teaching one little girl came up to our interpreter and asked how she could be saved. She gave her life to Jesus right there.

Before this trip began we emphasized 3 things: Depend on the Holy Spirit to work through us, be flexible, and be unified as a team. These students have done all three to the highest level. God is using them like crazy! Some are sick from altitude and plans often change at the last minute but they are still rejoicing and thankful to God. The team is unified and loving one another too. It's awesome to see a community of believers come together for such a mission and love Jesus so much.

One student today ate ginny (guinea) pig and somehow came back to the hotel with the pig's foot/claw. It kinda grossed me out but he thinks it's cool. All is well here. I'll try and post a few pics later tonight.

--pray for Karis and Angela as they aren't feeling too well.
--pray for these new believers today.
--pray we finish well tomorrow as it's our last day in the mountains.

Day 5 continued

Well, our mission to Peru is half way over. We have only 2 days left in Huancayo then a day of travel back to Lima on Friday. Saturday will be spent seeing the city and then we'll fly out that evening. This trip is going by too fast!

Everyone is doing well and each day gets better with ministry and seeing what God is doing through us. Our 4 teams got together tonight at 10pm to share what's been happening. Here are a few things...

--Each student was given a Spanish Bible to give away to someone here. We wait for the divine moment or special connection with someone. Mandy Martin and her team got in a cab with a Peruvian lady today and Mandy struck up a conversation with her. She was asking Mandy a lot of questions and why she was in Peru. Mandy told her about Jesus and the mission work. She thought that was interesting and asked questions about other things. When they were getting out of the car Mandy gave her the Bible. Her name is Patty. Pray that Patty would be drawn to read it and that the good news would change her.
--One team was doing ESL with university students today. The director of the school asked that our student not outright share about Christianity when teaching. Tonight the class asked why our students were here and they shared briefly about the mission work. For the next hour and a half the Peruvian students asked question after question about Jesus.
--One of the teachers of the ESL school seemed very unresponsive today to any talk of Christ. They students left out of the session a little disappointed wondering if they had made any impact. Don Squires left his Bible at the school by accident and later had to go back and get it. When he returned the disinterested teacher said, "You must have come back for your Bible. I've been reading it since you left and it's very interesting with good things in it".
--One group ate guinea pig. They actually watched the lady kill it, skin it, cook it, and serve it to them!
--My team trained a group of pastors and their families in how to evangelize and share their faith. We spent 2 hours in the freezing cold in a church building with no roof and a dirt floor---and we couldn't have been happier. These Christians seemed so eager as we taught scriptures and Jen shared how she came to faith. Even the little kids were asking questions about how to talk to their teachers about the evolution they were learning in school. One little girl asked what color is God :). Jesus actually had her color skin:). We are going back tomorrow to go out in the village with them to share the Gospel.
--One of our Peruvian interpreters, Martin, knows pretty good English but declared tonight to our group that there is no way humanly possible that he has been able to interpret with such clarity as he has this week. No way humanly possible. He says that Jesus is amazing him and the Holy Spirit is taking over for him b/c he can't believe the words coming from his mouth.

Well, there's a lot more going on but that's just a little. The sun is so intense I think I'm getting sunburned at night :). Thanks for keeping up with us and praying for us as well.

Day 4 Video

Day 4 Pics and Stuff

Tonight one of the teams went to a college's language school and had conversational english with students. Cliff Daniels spent most of the night talking with a Peruvian named Abel who is not a Christian. He asked Cliff why he and the other American students were here. He told Abel he was here to teach English and to share about the love and hope of Jesus Christ. When the class was over Abel asked Cliff how he could get in touch with him later this week to talk more. Pray this will happen.

Jen and Sarah on the mountain.

Sarah and Bryan on top of the mountain during lunch break.

Several of us painted a building for the president (yes they call them presidents) of the village.

This Peruvian woman lived on the side of the mountain in a make shift house. She came out to greet us and was so sweet shaking our hands. I think she herds sheep.

Peruvian school kids...are quite shy!

Jen and Sarah teaching the kids.

This is a shot from our bus on the 16,000 foot pass on our way to Huancayo.

Day 4

I just spoke with Peter and everyone is doing well. They went into the schools today and educated the students on hygiene and talked to them about Jesus! They also had conversational english classes with some ppl.

DAY 3 -- Peter's Post

Hey Folks,

I'll go ahead and say sorry for any misspelled words b/c I'm in a hurry. :) We are here and the electricity is back on after 20 hours. It was out in the whole city. This place is awesome and the people are so friendly. We are at 10,700 feet so we walk up a flight of stairs and your heart is beating in your head and you are huffing like you ran a marathon. Yesterday we drove from sea level to 16,000 feet in 4 hours. Only one student was affected by the altitude.

Today is Sunday and we spent the morning worshiping with a Baptist church and then broke up into our teams and planned out our week. This afternoon one team of 8 did ministry with kids, youth, and adults in a village outside of town and 3 women decided they wanted to give their lives to follow Jesus. Some of the native Peruvian ladies are going back up there next week to meet with these ladies to get a Bible study going for them in the weeks and months ahead. One day... 3 new believers. Tomorrow most teams are going into elementary schools to teach kids about hygiene, living well, and the good new of Jesus. So pray the Holy Spirit will take our love and words and change little hearts for Christ. My team is also painting a building for the mayor of a village so we have an opportunity to serve this village and share love and hope of Christ too.

All our students are energized and working well together. They are praying together and truly trusting God to use them.

We had Chinese food last night and Italian tonight...but hope to have Peruvian food soon!

The weather was colder today, jackets and all...it's late fall here. The sun at this altitude is really intense so we bought sun screen today.

Thanks for the prayers, we really appreciate it. Here's a few more...

-we would stay sick free.
-that we would live Isaiah 40 and put our hope in the Lord so we can run and not grow weary...b/c we are going full out and could easily get tired.
-we only have 4 more days here in Huancayo--that we would seize every moment to love and minister.
-pray not for one or two people but for the whole village to come to know Christ and be mature in Him so they could reproduce disciples.
-Pray for the 3 new believers today and they would grow.

I'll update again later.

Peter

Day 3 -- No electricity

The team is without electricity. Their part of the city is out so I had a limited conversation with Peter this evening and we cannot communicate via Skype because of the electricity issue. He did not give me any particular prayer requests. He says everything is going well.
  • Pray that the team adjusts as well as possible to the new altitude. Going from below sea level to 10,000 ft. is difficult. Pray that no one encounters severe altitude sickness.
  • Pray for the Peruvian people and missionaries that they will visit with on Monday.
  • Pray for the electricity to be restored.

Prayer Requests

We will be traveling to Huancayo, Peru, about 140 miles east of the capital city Lima. Huancayo is in the mountains at an elevation of 11,700 feet. Pray for our lungsJ. We will break into 4 teams during the day for ministry in the city and nearby villages. The ministry projects will be teaching in schools, using conversational English, working with youth and children, and assisting church plants.

A few prayer requests as we prepare and go:

· That we would be the presence of Jesus to all people we come in contact with—from the airline stewardess to the Peruvian children.
· That we would live in accordance with the Spirit and have our minds set on what the Spirit desires. (Romans 8:5)
· That our team will be unified. (John 17:20-23)
· That God will use our words, smiles, and efforts to change lives. (For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5)
· Pray for safety and that everyone is sick free
